A refreshed digital strategy that clearly communicates CSSC’s value and drives member engagement and enquiries

Case Study - CSSC

The Goal

CSSC engaged Rightsource Solutions to modernise their digital presence and boost member engagement. With a brief to improve conversion rates, CSSC needed to clarify their online value proposition so that current and potential members would instantly understand the benefits of joining. The specific goals were to revamp the website and homepage, review SEO to improve how CSSC is found online, and to suport the digital roadmap with a member-first strategy designed to drive engagement and increase membership.

The Back Story

Although CSSC is a well-established membership organisation with a strong offline reputation, its digital presence was no longer supporting its future growth ambitions. Brand awareness among public sector workers was also low, and organic search visibility was not strong enough to compensate.

CSSC’s website had evolved organically over time rather than strategically. The homepage and employer-facing pages, two of the most important acquisition touchpoints, lacked clarity around CSSC’s value proposition, particularly for non-members encountering the organisation for the first time. Messaging was emotionally positive but vague, and the site was not optimised for modern discovery behaviours, including AI-driven search results or to prompt action. As a result, and combined with few trust signals, CSSC’s online engagement and conversion opportunities were being missed.

Internally, CSSC recognised the need for an external, experienced perspective to help bridge the gap between senior leadership intent and day-to-day web delivery. We were brought in not just to improve pages, but to help CSSC think differently about the website as a strategic acquisition and growth platform, while supporting and strengthening the existing web team.

Objectives

  • To clarify CSSC’s digital value proposition, so prospective members immediately understand what CSSC offers, who it is for, and why it is worth joining.

  • To define and deliver a clear acquisition-led web strategy, positioning the website, particularly the homepage and employer pages as primary drivers of member recruitment.

  • To develop a web improvement plan, aligned with CSSC’s wider digital roadmap and board-level priorities.

  • To improve organic discoverability and brand awareness, ensuring CSSC appears prominently in both traditional search results and emerging AI-driven search narratives for relevant public sector queries.

  • To support and upskill the existing web team, providing external expertise, structure and guidance that enables sustainable improvement rather than short-term fixes.

  • To act as a bridge between senior leaders and delivery teams, translating strategic goals into practical, prioritised web improvements that can realistically be delivered.

What We Did

  • Audited analytics: Analysed how members and prospects were using the site. This allowed us to identify quick-win opportunities for content and SEO improvements.

  • Content rewrite and site refresh: Working closely with the CSSC team, we rewrote homepage text and reorganised the site so that the main value proposition (“Join CSSC to get free days out, gym savings, and more”) is crystal-clear and each page guides members toward useful actions. We also added eye-catching trust indicators (e.g. member count, savings statistics) and clear calls-to-action (like “Join now” buttons).

  • SEO and keyword strategy: We researched relevant search terms (e.g. “civil service gym discount”, “public sector family days out”, etc.) and suggested changes to page metadata, headings and copy. This ensured CSSC’s important content could be easily found by people searching for member benefits.

  • Coordinated email and web campaigns: We suggested a more joined up approach between teams to ensure that email newsletters, site updates and social media posts follow a shared schedule and messaging creating a seamless journey for the member.

  • Accessibility and compliance: We introduced tools to CSSC that would help them to meet WCAG accessibility and GDPR standards. For example, we recommended adding an AI-driven accessibility widget and an automated cookie-consent manager. These tools not only ensure all visitors can access CSSC’s content, but also act as strong trust signals that help SEO.

The Results

At the time of writing, CSSC’s digital transformation is actively underway. Rather than focusing on headline metrics prematurely, the value to date has been in clarity, alignment and momentum, creating the conditions for sustainable improvement rather than short-term wins.

What has been achieved so far

  • Clear strategic direction established
CSSC now has a shared understanding of the website’s role as a primary acquisition and engagement platform, with the homepage and employer pages clearly identified as priority assets.

  • Member-first thinking embedded
The introduction of a clear member persona has helped shift internal conversations away from system constraints and toward experience, value and outcomes for real members.

  • Acquisition brought into sharper focus
The link between website performance, brand awareness, organic search visibility and recruitment performance has been clearly articulated and agreed at a senior level.

  • Improved alignment between leadership and delivery teams
By acting as a bridge between senior stakeholders and the web team, Rightsource has helped translate strategic ambition into realistic, prioritised web improvements.

  • A structured 12-month web improvement plan in development
Work is progressing on a practical, phased roadmap that aligns web improvements with CSSC’s wider digital strategy.

  • Greater confidence in future decision-making
CSSC is now better equipped to assess future platform, content and capability investments based on member value and acquisition impact, rather than technology preferences alone.

What success will look like

The next phase of work will focus on turning this strategic clarity into measurable outcomes, including:

  • Increased awareness and organic discoverability among public sector workers

  • Improved conversion from first-time visitors into members

  • Clearer, more compelling employer and member journeys

  • A more confident, empowered web team able to deliver ongoing improvements

  • Stronger evidence for board-level investment decisions

These outcomes will be delivered incrementally, ensuring change is sustainable, evidence-led and aligned to CSSC’s long-term goals.
